Bargain Box Badasses from Childhood

Complained for a long time they don't make cars like they used to, to the point began feeling like a grumbly old man, but for the opposite reasons a normal person would. Quality's up all across the board, but so are the prices.

The following cars I've all had the pleasure of driving, biased of course as i've owned most, but they were all ridiculously affordable cars brand new, good on gas, and endlessly fun to toss around. If it's not fun to drive, i don't give a damn about it.

1st Gen Integra
Better styling than it's accord hatch counterpart, cheaper than the honda when new. $12,000 bucks got you a surprisingly agile and peppy car that's still more fun to drive than most new entry level cars 22 years later. With the rear seats folded you could almost fit a full sheet of plywood in the back, and add 33city/40hwy gas mileage and your looking at a car most manufacturers are still trying to match today.

Nissan Sentra SE-R
Another $12,000 gem when new. Visually unassuming in stock form, these little buggers were laid out well for the driver, roomy enough for regular passengers, fun loose going into the corners, they managed to always lock in late and feel good through. Always added to the excitement of pushing 'em hard, and the SR20 loved it the harder you pushed.

VW GTI VR6
$20,000 new, but didn't hold their price well. You could pick up one with a couple years on it for half that. Fantastic interior in it's range for the time, decent handling stock, and a whole lotta go packed into a little shell. Passenger seating left something to be desired, but who gives a damn when you can toss it around a gravel lot like a rally car in total control, then zip past a soap bar mustang on the highway home.

Accord V6 Coupe
$25,000 new, but another that became affordable quickly once it hit the used market. Styling that still holds up, roomy interior, good layout, Fun as shit to drive. Honda's been blowing it for awhile now, making unecessarily bigger and heavier cars while stagnant in the hp department, perhaps they need to look back in their own history books. This thing fit a family of four comfortably, and is svelt compared to even todays fatty civics. I'd still rather have one of these than any of it's successors.

What would you add to the list?

A great result of the unfortunate economy and gas prices, hatchbacks and economy cars are once again becoming legit options to regular consumers, and in turn more appealing to manufacturers to make. Next post, awesome new options that don't require you ditch the fun in order to get a bargain.

People been bitching for years about Cee Lo rapping again, like Andre 3k shit, despite the fact he's been doing it all along and then some. I like Goodie Mob, don't get me wrong, and he's manhandled verses above the best of 'em (Dro in the Wind much?) but the main reason I've enjoyed him over the years was his solo albums. One of only a handful of legitimately Batshit Insane people with the talent to back it up. The assholes made songs i love despite John "Blues Traveler harmonica fucktard" Popper cameos.

The first Gnarls Barkley album was pop perfect throughout, the second i can't even make it through a year or two after the fact. 'Lo is best just freakin the fuck out on musical tangents. Stray bullets is the new mixtape good enough to just be an album, with a proper album coming out later this year. But this has some of the finest he's done in years already. Summer jams, Newhart Show lounge shit, 70's funk rock, a song with the b-52's involving Fred Schneider singing about how he likes his Pussy, the balls to put the first Goodie Mob reunion track in forever over a Nick Cave sample. Just fucking listen to it.

Bun B, estelle, and others. Either way a return to form the first one ten years ago made me so excited. Know the live show opening for beastie boys back in the day didn't impress anyone, but this album is immaculate legit shit that only comes around once in awhile. Cruising, chanting, sing along, solid rap and great tracks.

Any premeditated doubts, listen to Back Again and you'll be sucked right in.

Delorean's debut LP "Subiza" is quickly growing into a favourite, summer soundtrack material. 'Grow' is standout in particular, first grabbing my attention a couple of days ago when it struck me as the sunny inverse of a Burial track. This 'live in the studio' video from pitchfork doesn't quite do the album version full justice, but should be a serviceable way to experience the song whilst giving your eyes something to do.

After reading a Why We Fight on pitchfork (a discussion on approach to merits of music, fucking awesome) i was rubbed once again with the idea that the nomenclature of "Indie" is applied to everything now that isn't Beyonce.

While nitpicking genres used to be relegated for Sam Goody arguments as to whether NIN was stacked in the Rock or Heavy Metal section, Independent music doesn't leave much room for iffy-ness........

At most, small label. Independent label. Non-corporate label. At worst, unsigned band you dug enough to hope you could hate them later once everyone found out about them a year later (haterish bitches).

Still, anything not immediately played on radio is Indie now and wondering why. Labels are labels, easy outs the same. But the descriptor is less a vague feeling of the music and more an actual status, so I'm continuously confused.

Doesn't matter at all in the grand scheme, hadn't ranted in a while, but wtf?

Also read that article and anticipate more. I miss legit music arguments.

Every time some deranged asshole flies a plane into a building or shoots his classmates/coworkers, we hear from the television and the mouths of the elderly that the world is spiraling uncontrollably towards the endtimes. Crazy is nothing new though, and these people have short memories. If you think people committing horrific acts of violence on innocent bystanders is just now coming into vogue, check out this lunatic and what he did- in 1927.

I'm a little suprised there has never been a film made about or inspired by this, though given the supreme awfulness of what happened I suppose there wouldn't be an appropriate way to handle it.
Another possibilty is that media of the day, or at least the people involved, were unwilling to sensationalize or even talk about what happened. Crazy always been crazy, but it would seem that in the present day, sane is way more willing to watch.

30 Rock has become my new obsession. I’m not only infatuated with the characters and storylines but I have, in my mind, compared the show to such greats as the Office, Arrested Development and dare I say, Seinfeld.

To me, there is no weak link. Each actor on the show was perfectly cast and their character strategically placed to work well with the others.

Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Jack McBrayer, Jane Krakowski and yes, Tracy Morgan all add to success that is 30 Rock. So, to one Chunk T, you were right. I don’t know why I hated on it so much but you were right. I’m only in season one but am lovin’ it. It brightens up my day and makes me LOL constantly.

If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out on instant netflix. One or two episodes will get you hooked.

When I first heard about this movie I got really excited. I thought it would be added to the long list of Kaufman movies that I enjoy though not being a Kaufman movie itself. And like me, every reviewer and critic has compared it to one of those classic "what the fuck, who could have thought of this" kind of movie.

I mean sure, somewhere there is someone who has a magic portal that lets him control John Malkovich (maybe) and I'm pretty sure you can erase your memory in some way or another to forget a harmful person plus there are a lot of odd people in this world and I'm sure at least one of them would like to make a life size play about their life. I can talk myself into believing all this.

However, the idea of extracting ones soul and replacing it, to me, is not only the most realistic but honestly an inevitable road that we will be strolling down. I mean come on people it's about time right? Plastic surgery is only skin deep. What if I want to change more then just my appearance? What if I want to be beautiful on the outside AND the inside? What if the soul I was given just isn't me? How will I ever be happy with this worn out soul?

These are just a few questions that I know I've asked myself and possibly you've asked as well. Fear not my friends, this movie brings to light the need to change. The need to be someone else.

I don't like long reviews so I will give you a bottom line.

The idea was there, the acting was pretty good but overall it was no Kaufman. The writing was off and story slowed at times. If I wasn't so into the idea of soul removal I think it would have bored me a bit. Definitely worth checking just to get some references though.

What comes to mind when you hear Mel Gibson’s name? (Besides being a racist religious fanatic) Violence; all his most famous and best movies are about it. Mel gets real upset and hurts some guys good. Think of the films: Mad Max’s, Lethal Weapon’s, the war trilogy= Braveheart, Patriot, We Were Soldiers. His directorial efforts as of late have also been violent Apocalypto & Passion of The Christ.

I like to think of his new film Edge of Darkness as part of the revenge trilogy with Ransom and Payback included. Those were both better movies though. Ransom had suspense and Payback had a dark humor to it. Edge is just Mel on a mission with nothing to do but have emotional breakdowns. The preview makes it seem like Mel gonna go crazy and wreak things. But it’s more of a mystery than anything like that.

This is his first acting gig since 2002’s Signs. I am glad to have Mel back in front of the camera; I think he has a cool screen presences. I read a review were they where comparing him to Clint Eastwood. I think who could keep going in that direction and make some good movies.

Is it worth seeing? How much do you like revenge pictures? I was never bored or pissed so that’s a good thing. However, it’s pretty standard; there were only a couple of memorable moments. I give it 3/5 stars.

Jesus Christ!

I was not ready for what I just went through. A movie of this magnitude requires me to side step my usual format for something a little less cohesive.

I laughed, I felt disgusted, I felt content, I felt jealous, I put my hand over my face with my finger separated because I didn't want to see what was happening but I did. Yes, I went through a lot in an hour and a half.

This movie will get passed by many and may not win any awards but I think it was a joy to watch and definitely something that Danger will laugh at. The only thing I ask is that you go in with an open mind and enjoy yourself.

A while ago AV Club reviewed and rated Crank 2...they gave it an A-. That movie was insane. So much happened I didn't know what was going on half the time, it was ridiculous. But enjoyable nonetheless.
