This week the Nick Cage film Knowing is opening in which he finds a buried note that can predict the apocalypse. Yuck! Chris and I had a big argument about whether Cage had any redeeming qualities. This is my rebuttal.

Its time to take stock of my fallen hero. I remember really thinking he was a good actor in the 90’s sure he was in shit like City of Angles and Con Air. But he took risks and worked with top talent like Scorsese, Cohen brothers, Ridley Scott, and Spike Jones. He even won an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas (one of the most gloriously depressing movies ever). Films like 8mm and Bringing Out the Dead blew me away. I own at least 5 of his pictures.

Then a strange thing happened, the well ran dry, I mean Mohave. I have worked at a theater for 3 years now and during that time Cage has put out 7 movies that all suck badly. Were talking career low marks. I’ve gotten to where if I see his name on a trailer I grown “oh no, not again”. Some say he doing it for the money but I don’t buy this. He spent the first decade doing noncommercial projects. Then once he hit pay dirt with The Rock he still balanced his output with indie pictures.

What the fuck happened. My guess based on the output is he got the DeNiro syndrome where he compulsively had to keep himself working. Quality goes to the wayside. However, unlike DeNiro these films had no redeeming qualities. So in my opinion he has lost his way big time. My advice is please Nick stop, regroup, and choose wisely. I still want to see you rock.

The cast now includes Mickey Rourke, Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren, Forest Whitaker, Eric Roberts and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film tells the story about an “expendable” team, hired to do jobs
that no one else can or will. The team is sent to infiltrate a South American country to overthrow the ruthless dictator and liberate the country.

IDW put's out a ton of great stuff, my favorite by a guy named Ben Templesmith whose comics look more like paintings throughout than illustratons, that's another post altogether though. 'Rum Diary' Finally

Depp, Heard cast in Hunter S. Thompson tale

BERLIN -- Aaron Eckhart and Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins will be hitting the sauce in "Rum Diary," the adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel that stars Johnny Depp.

Eckhart is in negotiations while Jenkins is signed on for the movie, which Bruce Robinson adapted and is directing. Amber Heard also is on board.

Eckhart is part of a love triangle that sees him vying with Depp for Heard's affection. "Diary" is the tale of a washed-up, hard-drinking journalist named Paul Kemp (Depp) in 1950s Puerto Rico. Eckhart would play Sanderson, a wealthy landowner who believes everything has a price and introduces Kemp to a different standard of living.

Jenkins is playing Lotterman, the man who oversees the rundown newspaper where Kemp works.

The project, which Depp, Christi Dembrowski and Graham King are producing, begins shooting March 30 in Puerto Rico. "Rum" is a production of King's GK Films and Depp's Infinitum Nihil. Also producing is Film Engine, with A.J. Dix, Anthony Rhulen and William Shively attached alongside Robert Kravis and Greg Shapiro. GK Films is preselling at the European Film Market in Berlin.

Trading Towns

I actually just talked to Chris, but I wanted to let everybody know that I have decided that I am moving back down South. There are a lot of reasons, but mostly I think that it is just time to move on from Providence. I have a lot of great memories here, but I think that if I continue to stay on here that may not continue to be the case. Leaving on a high note like Costanza. There is also a lot going on with my family that I think that I am missing; graduations, my little sister going on to middle school, elderly relatives, etc.

But I do still want to maintain some semblance of independence and keep things fresh. I decided to move to Charleston because A) I have never lived there B) the town has really grown on me over the last few years, and C) I had a good time hanging out with everyone over the break and would like to continue that.

My thought right now is that I will be moving down in the middle of April and staying with my mom for a few weeks. Then probably be ready to move down to Charleston around the beginning of May. I'll keep everyone posted, but that seems like the best scenario for right now.

4 Walls + Adobe Slats

I've liked Animal Collective for a hot minute now, but they're a hard sell for most. Weylin turned me onto them a couple of years ago, though i'd heard about them for a even hotter minute, most likey through lee. I remember listening to " Feels" on my iPod walking through Hitchcock woods, and falling for it. I would drop 'Leaf House" from Sung Tongs randomly into my sets at cuizine. Last year's "Strawberry Jam" did little for me, but Panda Bear's "Person Pitch" was a favorite.

I'm not used to the band's i like having a prodiguous output, so "Merriweather Post Pavilion", close on the heel of "Strawberry Jam" and the interm EP "Water Curses" was unexpected and suprising. Check it out:




I love this album. Favorites are: my girls, daily routine, blusih, summertime clothes, brothersport. This video is good but probably not a classic, but i like the things it reminds me of: taking LSD and amatuerishly fucking around with music. I'm not saying that's what animal collective is doing; but if it was they should be really proud of themselves.

Begone Dull Care comes out on Domino in Canada on March 24, with a U.S. release set for April 7."

How was your Christmas break?

I had a month to do nothing. Chris said why don’t you take a trip. My response, think im gonna watch movies. I set the goal of 50 over the break, when I reached it in 2 weeks I set a new one. 100 films in a month. I almost made it, 92 to be exact. Here’s the cream of the crop, so you don’t have to waste the time. I stand by these films as worthwhile. Check em out if you have netflix’s, or just run into one.


1. Cashback- future cult classic, mundane jobs, imaging girls naked. I can relate.
2. Network- Sidney Lument’s follow up to Dog Day Afternoon, All star cast & it won a shit ton of Oscars
3. The Outlaw Josey Wales- Eastwood’s 2nd best western, the yang to Unforgiven’s ying.
4. King of Kong- documentary about Donkey Kong. Shit is serious as fuck.
5. The Puffy Chair- credit to Chris on this one. You go thru a whole relationship with the girl in the film. (In a bad way)
6. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button- David Fincher (Seven, Fight Club) & Brad Pitt reunite with one of the best female actress around Cate Blanchet.
7. Man on Wire- on all the year end best list, about as good as documentaries get.
8. Rumble Fish- Francis Ford Coppola’s follow up to The Outsiders, way better & in black and white. A teenage art film.
9. Battle Royale- props to Lee, Japanese kids killing each other real good. Funny as hell.
10. Jacob’s Latter- I remember this one from back in the day. Gave it a 2nd shot. Holds up well.

Best Albums of 2008

I was inspired to create my own top ten albums list after visiting with everyone these last couple weeks, I am warning you that there are some stretches. I wanted to say that it was a lot of fun and I promised several folks that I would make an attempt at staying in better contact. So my aping your lists is that first attempt. Without further adieu here is my list of the best albums of 2008 (in order):

1. Raphael Saadiq- The Way I See It (I may have this album a little high at number one, but it was just such a breath of fresh, or I guess more accurately recycled, air. This album is a picture perfect Motown album, and although you can hear the new recording advances in the production, it really seems somehow extremely pure. That is, of course, except the bonus track where Jay-Z drops a guest rap (it’s not that great and I could have done without it). Maybe this just represents my excitement at first hearing Saadiq’s Smokey Robinson inspired soul, but I am putting it number 1. PS- Don’t buy any of his other albums, they are dogshit)

2. Flight of the Conchords- S/T (The show is great and I may get a lot of shit for this, but this album did not leave my car CD player for a solid week after I got it. If you have not seen the show, watch it, and if you don’t have this album, buy it. Some of the mixes are a lot different on the album than the show, and it usually works out for the better.)

3. Lil’ Wayne- Tha Carter III (Really great album, altough I think it still plays a little more like a very coherent, high-budget mix tape rather than a full album, but there is nothing really I could say about Lil’ Wayne that has not already been said. Really love the literalness of “Mr. Carter” being that both he and Jay-Z have the surname Carter, and I think that “Dr. Carter” is one of the more clever songs, especially for a mainstream record that I have heard, maybe ever.)

4. The Knux- Remind Me in Three Days (Got this one for Christmas, so I haven’t had a chance to play it more than twice, but I was really struck by it. Really plays well all the way through and of course extra props for playing their own instruments.)

5. Roger Miller- S/T (Vinyl Reissue) (This is a HUGE stretch, I bought a used copy of this album at a local record store run by this big vinyl nerd. He told me that they had just reissued this album and they made a select run of vinyl. Of course I paid 4 dollars for a 60’s or 70’s copy. Anyway, great, great album, really straddles that fine line of traditional and serious country songs with those ridiculous ones that he was known for. No shit, a small tear welled up in my eye on the last song “Vance.”)

6. Gnarls Barkley- The Odd Couple (Really good follow-up to one of my favorite albums of the last few years. Another one, like Mello Gold, that wasn’t able to hold my full adult ADD attention span all the way through. But it has some great tracks and is overall a very enjoyable listen.)

7. C-Rayz Walz and Kosha Dillz- Free Style vs. Written (This album is great, it pairs one of favorite MC’s, C-Rayz-Walz, with Kosha Dillz (a Jewish rapper from Hairy Chest, New Jersey, wherever that is) and they take turns free styling and writing as the album title would indicate. They also switch verses on some songs, it is pretty hilarious to hear the white Jewish Kosha Dillz saying “Killa bong, bong/ From the BX baby live with my moms, moms.” Despite all the kitsch and novelty of the project there are some really great beats and excellent rhymes from both MCs.)

8. Beck- Mello Gold (To be honest, I have only given this album a couple of listens all the way through. There are some solid tracks that stand out when they come up on random on my mp3 player, but it lacked some of the hook that “The Information” and certainly “Guero” had. Good album overall though.)

9. The Hold Steady- Stay Positive (Sort of an adult punk rock album. I noticed it was not a popular choice when I spoke with some danger crew members about it, but I loved the themes of drugs, touring, positivity, and teenage angst being sung by a 40-year-old man)

10. Steve Earle- Washington Square Serenade (Actually released in late 2007, but I just got it this year. Not a great album, but like I said I stretched some of these, and this is sort of a yearlong listen achievement award because I spent large portions of the year listening to “I’ll be Alright,” “El Corazon,” and “Guitar Town,” which are all far superior albums. But it’s not a bad album and it has some interesting concepts and tracks. He mixed the album with the dust brothers, spends most of the songs singing in country twang about living in New York City, and he closes with a pretty poor version of a great Tom Waits song.)

1. Dark Knight- the best superhero movie of all time.
2. Pineapple Express- great movie about friendship, and getting high.
3. Iron Man- injects the genre with a heavy dose of humor, thank you very much.
4. Role Models – it’s hard to be happy with life; perhaps dysfunctional kids are the answer.
5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall- ever broke a girlfriend and spent a long time crying about it? Shut up you wimp and laugh.
6. Burn After Reading- people are stupid, especially when they try to get over.
7. Step Brothers- for the man-child in us all.
8. Choke- god bless black comedy.
9. India Jones & The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull- don’t believe the hype, its good to have ‘em back.
10. Synecdoche, New York- not a happy scène in the whole thing, I loved it.

Well the New Year is here and let’s see what happen in 08 with the movies. It appears comedies had the best share this year with 4 films (Pineapple Express, Role Models, Sarah Marshall, & Step Brother). All four related to the Apatow crew, that’s dudes on a serious role. The blockbusters (Dark Knight, Iron Man, & India Jones) also had a good showing, leading the list. Lastly, there were some good independent movies as well. (Burn After Reading, Choke, & Synecdoche) Don’t miss any of these.

These movies were so bad it hurt. I go see everything due to my occupation. These are the ones I regret the most. Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer have now made 4 terrible films (Disaster Movie, Date Movie, Epic Movie, & Meet the Spartans). They need to be stopped and killed.





Netflix: Bringing Back the Funk

1. Five Easy Pieces- Jack Nicholson is one of my favorite actors and this is the role that made him a star. It’s an existential meditation on love a meaning of life, right up my alley.
2. The Last Picture Show- growing up in a small town sucks. This movie sorts that a much more out. Jeff Bridges & Cybil Shepherd when she was hot.
3. Diner- Dudes hanging out late night. Reminds me of nights a Waffle House with the Danger Crew. Many future stars including the awesome Mickey Rourke, in a role where you see why he got a shot at redemption in Wrestler.
4. Human Nature- The lost Kauffman/ Gondry team up. About manners and monkey men. Funny as hell. Tim Robbins & Patricia Arquette
5. My Left Foot- Daniel Day Lewis is his Oscar wining performance. Like Tropic Thunder says “never go full retard”


God bless Netflix’s. After much hesitation. (I fear my obsessive traits) lee convinced me to get it and my life got flipped upside down. In short, I stopped watching TV or leaving me bed at all. The beauty of this is movies I always heard about but couldn’t get a blockbuster where now easily available. In that spirit these movies are old and flew under everyone’s radar. I found em and now you can share the joy.



Anticipated Films

1. The Wrestler- Mickey Rourke (one of the best 80’s actors) gets a chance to shine again. With the help of director Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream)
2. Revolutionary Road- Titanic lovers reunite (DiCaprio & Winslet) reunite a decade later with out all the cheesiness and dead people.
3. Che- Benicio Del Toro is the man. This ones so long its two separate movies.
4. Gran Torino- basically, Dirty Harry 6 the geriatric years. Count me in.
5. Defiance- After centuries of getting their ass kicked. Jews fight back. You’re kidding.


This is what’s coming in the next couple months that look good. Oscars are on the way. And don’t even get me started on the next summer.
