Modern Discourse, long diatribe, forewarned

Just joined facebook. Here's what happened in a two week period that's fucked my head up moreso than usual.

#1 Opened while still fresh out the bar to talk to a girl definitely my junior (but within acceptable age difference, shut up). No direct contact as far as i can tell other than added to a "friend" list nearing the thousands, still not sure how facebook works. Fingers crossed she's into me!

#2 "Friended" without an approval process by people who were never my friends but "know" me through high school, college, randomness, etc.

#3 Subjected to updates of ex-girlfriends on their current status when it wasn't a concern, goal, nor passing interest to know what's going on in their lives.

Just now, asked to send contact info for a ten year high school reunion by disclosure #2, bum bum! things become compounded.

So many issues at once, never came up with the courage to delete myspace, though i've regretted/attempt deleted/wanted to remove my account and the majority of aspects of it for years but can't because of:

a: the idea that this is how we communicate now. evolution of social discourse. fear of being out of the loop, out of touch, fighting progress because i'm not hip

b: vanity: someone somewhere outside of us is paying attention to my drunken rants/opinions/prose on things that don't/can't/will never matter

c: addendum: i'm clever and important but no one knows it yet and will need a bloggable history of my life for future generations to make sense of how important/cool/googleable i am after i croak and they realize what a mistake it was they didn't pay atteniton to me sooner.

there is so much wrong on so many levels.

is myspace/facebook/twitter really a positive addition? especially considering that it's evolving so quickly into less cognizant variations so quickly? we should start a site that let's you post single words so that six months from now we'll make money off a stream of conscience book of the stream of concious from the collective conscience. it will be unreadable, meaningless in a directly informative way, but will get plenty of blog hype and 2nd page fodder for local newspapers usually providing free advertising for local business.

oh the aspiration!

chunks seems excited about twitter from the aspect that now it doesn't matter, but in the future you'll be able to look at posts to see exactly what was going on at that point in time over a grand scope. social experiment yes, communication no?

let's log the failure to communicate clearly in a format that prohibits from communicating clearly?

reposting other's ideas/art/music/contributions in lieu of working on creating your own. feels like the well is running dry and we're feeding on ourselves instead of finding a way out. i've done it a million times, sharing something with friends as a common memory/check this out type of deal, but feel 99.9% of the time it's passing on something someone else has done instead of us creating something to share with each other. i'm uncomfortable with that for some reason.

the same reason family guy is hated for it's pop culture references. it's the easy way out. hey you know about this, i know about this, let's bond over the fact we all know about this.

that equals the key component for a misery party akin to a high school reunion. oh shit! speak of the devil.

ten years later. let's be forced to think about what we have/haven't accomplished. let's revisit the juvenile notions of popularity/superiority and who we think we are. and let's all do it with people we haven't talked to in years because we didn't care about/hated/or grew apart from the people we haven't kept in touch with for good reason whether we can explain those reasons or not.

in day to day life, i enjoy where i'm at. long way to go, plenty of misteps, complete failures, and regrets, but ecstatic to still be inolved in a large group comparitively of interesting, thoughtful, and intelligent people whom all keep in contact well after the fact.

we're a rare breed. and it's become glaringly obvious, exciting, and upsetting all at once. why haven't we done more? if we're extraordinary as we've always felt why haven't we done extraordinary things, why are we still talking about things we're going to do, wish we did, are stopping ourselves from doing?

i've forced my opinion on plenty, but there's a common veign amongst us that spurts when we get together, but goes dry when left on our own. how do we stop this and get shit pumping again?

i don't want to give a shit about a high school reunion and own up that no one is ever gonna figure it out, but i definitely don't want to be bothered by a high school reunion because we haven't lived up to our own expectations.

whatever we thought they were.

fuck.

A Serious Bummer

MJ dies today, and i am sad. Sadder than i should be. For most people our age, MJ was the first music we can remember liking- i remember singing his praises on the swing in the second grade. My mom taped a long video retrospective on him in the early 90's that survived well into the the Danger Dome.

Besides being immensely talented, MJ had this weird magical overgrown child thing going on that made his early and middle work extra-special and fun for a kid. Unfortunatley for him this translated into being a profoundly strange adult with serious problems. Oh well. That's the price you pay for being the king of pop.

When we were all at the beach a couple of weeks ago, we played the "who should have died young" game, and MJ was universally agreed to have been better off if he'd kicked it in the late 80's. Even considering his diminished, often embarassing image over the last 20 years, i now regret saying that. He died today, and I feel loss.

Maybe it has more to do with the death of childhood than of MJ himself. He'll always be a huge part of my memories growing up, and seeing him go means letting a part of that go. It's time i guess. I'm twenty-six goddamn years old.

Schwartzman wants to help the peoples.

Rick tried for the steez, now in a reversal his life is getting played.

B.T.W. How's that job search coming buddy?

p.s. it helps if you actually send out resume's and go to real interviews with people that have the potential to hire you.

Hope the bahamas are snazzy.

Welfare

Shepard Fairey: "Just because you’ve reached a certain level of success, that doesn’t mean you’ve become corrupted by the system. It’s a very unhealthy idea that people have, that it’s underground vs. the mainstream, that you’re either keeping it real or selling out. I mean, there’s good and bad in every arena. It’s funny, some people, the reason they’re in the underground is because they’re lazy and don’t make things happen for themselves. They shit-talk about everything, but they don’t do anything; they have this cool, rebellious, outsider persona that they inhabit, but it doesn’t actually have anything constructive about it, and they’re just, “Yeah, I’m underground, keeping it real.”

"And then there’s people in the mainstream who work within the system, if that’s what you want to call it, that have great intentions, and then there are those people who abuse their power and are assholes. There are different types of people, good and bad, in every situation. So for me, the idea is that you don’t just go up the ladder and transition to a new point; you can fully move between every place in terms of success and culture, and work with the things that are the most constructive in every area. And people are going to say to me now—just because over the arc of my career, I’ve reached a certain point where I can make a living from art, and I’ve been able to do album covers for bands like Led Zeppelin—that means I sold out, or I don’t have the same ideals I once had. That’s ridiculous. But that is a big problem with success. They don’t see how they can get from where they are to that. So continuing with street art and all the things that have that punk-rock, do-it-yourself ethos that made me who I am just allows people to see how that evolution can occur, how to empower themselves, and that’s incredibly important."

I don't have the whole story, i don't dislike Justin and Paul to hate on them as people, but in regards to Welfare alot of shit I experienced personally seemed out of place.

Peter's in town and it got me thinking again, and I couldn't ever put it into words.

Not trying to reflect or insist peter's opinion in any way, solely my own, but this lifted from a shepard fairey interview sums up everything that confused me as to why welfare never got past the point it has, and in varying ways why alot of us haven't gotten past the points we have. don't get me wrong, i'm pointing a finger directly at myself (a'hm, red, a'hm).

kisses.

In a galaxy even farther away....

A little bit back Rick and I were talking about reboots and reimaginings, and i mentioned that maybe star wars could benefit from one. Rick seemed less than open to this idea, dismissing it offhand- "Lucas will never let it happen. They're too deep." I suggested that Lucas wouldn't live forever, and i think Rick got sad and changed the subject.

IO9 has some simple suggestions for rebooting star wars. Most of it's pretty simple stuff, taken from the success of Batman Begins and Star Trek, and sadly they don't say anything about Lucas dying (though there is something about him being in the poorhouse). I think a Star Wars reboot, done right, would be sublime.

Goodbye Rashida Jones...

there's a bunch of these. all awesome. plus aubrey plaza is hot.

Who else owes it all to Conan?

I started watching Late Night around the same time I started staying up late; i guess i was 12 or 13. Conan had been on maybe a year or so at that point, and most of the critics at the time seemed to think he was piss-poor, but to young chunky he was awesome. The whole show didn't feel like it belonged on network TV- it was weird, funny, and akward, and i stayed up most nights to watch it. To this day i think i'm the only person who remembers "Time Travel Week."

Anyway, i was glad to see Conan get the bump up to the Tonight Show, so here is the first episode for any who may have missed it. It's an instant classic.

Any thoughts? I was glad to see Andy back- i had seen some internet bitching about how he 'doesn't fit' but i think that's complete shit- andy's always been perfect as conan's sidekick. btw, that universal tram tour was the standout bit to me.

$5 Cover

Rick, probably the only one who will check this out. Worth it though. Watched these and to a certain degree this is pete's life. Music is pretty awesome, all real musicians they put into a Hills format, but totes watchable. Sticky muck or whatever in episode two is cringe worthy but the rest are great. Only 15 min apiece, decent time killer.

Passion Pit arguments created

Assuming no one else is even familiar with this. a months long war has been going on about passion pit as internet underservers of hype and hokey musicians.

all i've seen is their videos and heard the music, and it's fucking good, so i'm a bit confused as to the hatred.

none other than jarvis cocker stated this one sound's like born again christians doing justice's D.A.N.C.E. but other than any other song possibly sounding like a similiar song, i don't get it.

on top of that all the video collaberators have provided something interesting, admittedly not ground breaking, but interesting and fitting none the less.

just don't understand the backlash for a decent but forgettable group.

the electronic Hold Steady maybe?

a treat for those that atended

You already know this if you were there, but the Junior Boys are an excellent live act. Considering how 'manufactured' they sound on record, i wasn't expecting an amazing show, but was totally floored. These guys are the real deal. To me the biggest suprise was Jermey Greenspan's voice...so many times when you see a live act your realize the album cut was obviously the best vocal take out of hundreds...with this guy, some the live was on par and sometimes better.

I think the guy that recored this was standing directly behind us. i've watched a few of the other songs he recorded on youtube. i love this shit- this is right where is was standing, this was just what i saw.

Monday, May 11, 2009

if you're into this sorta thing

this should really do it for you. peter i might be talking to you.

Gotta love those miserable vocals...sounds like Unknown Pleasures recorded in the sixties? Wears it's infulences on it's sleeve but fuck what doesn't anymore.

On A Misty Morning, I Left My Window Down

There were thoughts entering but quickly leaving my mind. Namely of the text message and what it meant. It was a less than subtle jab at my spite of all things work-related. My behavior earlier in the night had echoed that sentiment. Joe, the new guy was the new person. Other than his comments against horse-man communions, I am inclined to appreciate his solid, sober work ethic.
"Here's the deal, Joe" I said, "Normally, I don't like to work really....at all. So normally, I just pay the door guy half my tips to do all the closing work for me."
I really would rather be leaning on the bar, talking to customers about music. I treat that as my job. That and drinking.
Anyway, back to the text message. It read: "website?!". The two punctuations didn't quite give the impression that either of them was meant to give by themselves. I've heard people say that emotions are almost impossible to understand through a text message or email, but I dissagree. I believe that you can see a person's soul through what they type or text. Push button history.
Well, the point is that the website is not yet up and running. That, and that it's four days past due. That coupled with the fact that I paid my bosses friend off to do my work while I drink with my friends.....Well, let's just say that I need to get to my homework. I was looking forward to getting past the first page of the new Jonfen book. I hadn't been able to read a book in quite some time. Well, that won't do. I must be getting to the meat of what it is to be alive soon. My thoughts drift to the insane. Not Insane thoughts, but thoughts about the insane....And how it can all be caused by things you eat and the couches that you sleep on.

Here's Parts 2 and 3:
