nerding out hardcore

When i was two my dad brought home our first Apple IIe. We had berenstain bears teach counting or something on 5.25 inch floppy. I didn't care for those nasty bears; little chunky was more interested in the disk it came on and the nasty yellow and black box it plugged in to. I guess i've always been a computer geek.

I was looking for a hobby, so i picked up a second computer off of schuler for 60 bucks. I spent $10 on a monitor at goodwill and $40 on a wireless network adaptor. The machine was a dell jason had bought when he was married (the computer was named 'jaylin' in XP, har...) and was four or so years old. Pentium 4, 2.0 ghz. Looked like jason had kicked the ram up from 256 to 700something, plus he'd tacked on a few other goodies...a dvd burner, a new graphics card.

Jaylin ran XP service pack 2, poorly. The thing was serious slow, a real awful bitch to use. After running it like that for a bit and growing increasingly frustrated, i decided that windows was the problem and to give something else a try. After using the open source mozilla firefox as a browser for two years i felt that free software was coming into it's own, and the time was ripe for trying a new, free OS. I fucking hate windows, and am to poor to own a mac. So i downloaded Ubuntu 8.04, an OS running the GNOME GUI over the linux kernel. yeah, fucking geeky, i know. Then i installed it on my computer...DRUNK.

I wasn't really drunk at the onset; but if you've ever done any serious computer project you know that it can take HOURS. And my computer is right next to my fridge. I hit a few bumps b/c of this....namely, i accidently completely fucked XP. Oh well. I'm not missing it.

I know that most of you aren't this hardcore geeky. I don't think any of you, even chris, would post screenshots of your desktop. but fuck it. for $100 i've got a machine that never crashes and do eyecandy beter than vista. Vista wouldn't even run on this computer. I would definetly recommend going with Ubuntu Linux to anyone willing to invest the time. The one downside is you have to be willing to be a problem solver, and get creatvie if things fuck up. Anyway, there's always google to answer your questions.

UPADATE FOR CHRIS:

okay blogger won't let me post url's and whatnot in the comments, as far as i can tell anyway, so i'll just add all yr goodies here.

Get Ubuntu here. it's a .iso file. you might want do a checksum on it after you download to make sure it's not corrupted....google about to find out how to do this, it's been awhile but it seems like it was a <1meg>Admistration>Synaptic Package Manger) to do all kinds of wicked shit. i would reccomend searching and installing compiz fusion from synaptic. this will add Advanced Desktop Settings to System>Preferences. that's how i've got all the wicked desktop shit going on now.

anyway good luck, if you decide to do it. it's really worth it....the included apps work great (Pigdin for IM, Transmission for torrents, GIMP for photoshoping, etc, Firefox for internet). the soulseek client for linux is called nicotine plus, and you can find it through synaptic. Have fun. this shit is cool.

Olympics of Comedy

The Olympics are here and no one cares. So go to the theater were the cool shit is at. For some reason all the good Comedies were saved till the end of the summer. When 3 films all competing for the same audience came out in 3 consecutive weeks. There all rated R and appeal to young males. Which should you see? Here’s the medal placement for the top contenders.

Bronze: Tropical Thunder-
I love Vietnam movies; I’ve seen almost all of them. This is a great concept; the genre was ripe for a good spoof. Unlike those Epic, Disaster, and Spartan movies which simply shit out the scenes from better films, this actually has laughs. There is Inspired casting, Robert Downey as a black guy. Jack Black as always is awesome. Ben Stiller wrote, directed, and stars. Excellent cameos Tom Cruise is actually funny. This one is a Stiller comedy that is actually good.

Silver: Step Brothers-
Ferrell & Reilly reunite to make us feel better about our immaturity. They co-wrote the thing with Adam McKay (Talladega & Anchorman). What was Talladega Nights lacking: an R rating to let the muse run wild screaming thru the fields or in this case the house. I could really relate to this film. It has an important message for all kids out their. Don’t give up the dream of juvenile behavior! It can be yours if you really want it. I’m coming out of adult retirement.

Gold: Pineapple Express-
Seth Rogan returns (writing & staring) to save James Franco from the Spiderman franchise. It’s a stoner action movie, the first of its kind I can recall. Lots of guns and fights scenes all while the charters are high. I talked to some girls who said it was too violent but fuck em what they know. It’s a guy’s flick for dudes that are to lazy too actually fight. This movie is what Hot Fuzz should have been. It feels like something one my friends would have come up with. The film felt real to me despite the action scenes. The movie's about the value of good friends done in the gayest way possible.

Get your ass to the multiplex. Their all worth the money. you know theres nothing else to do. Chunk bring your kid.

Star Trek

These are the new pics of the cast for the film. Looks cool to me. I agree with most of the choices. You got the bad guy on the top, played by Eric Bana. Uhura next on the right. Spock on the bottom is the Hero's guy. Next on the right is Kirk. Im ife on the guy playing Kirk cause i never seen him in anything.

Bottom middle is Bones. He's the dude who was in the lord of rings movies and he wasnt anywhere close to funny. So who knows on that one. Bottom Right corner is Chekov.

Im pumped about the reboot, think its the best thing that could be done with the ST universe at this point. If you want a better look or more info go to

Choke to feature new Radiohead goodness

It seems that not only have radiohead written a new song for the closing credits of the big screen adaptation of Choke, apparently they've composed a bunch of ambient music for the score. The story is here at Pitchfork. Apparently Choke author Chuck Palinuik is a Radiohead fan.

From BBC6, via Pitchfork:

"Clark Gregg...knew that I'd written Choke while listening to Pablo Honey, with 'Creep', over and over and over. So Clark got Radiohead to contribute a song; to write a song for the very end of the movie, the final credits.

"Apparently Radiohead liked the movie so much, they've written the score, most of the ambient music throughout it. So it's 'Choke-- with the music of Radiohead'."

Meet Ronald Chevalier

Apparently this is viral marketing from the upcoming film "Gentelmen Broncos," directed by Jared Hess of Napoleon Dynamite fame and staring Jemaine Clement, of Jemaine fame. If you'd like to try to partake of the bread of Dr. Chevalier's hand, try visiting his website.

Look What I Made With My Sperm

A few short months ago that title in this space would probably have most of you unwilling to read this post. I have a long history of building stuff with my cum, and you've all derided me for it; a few of you even tried have me commited. No more though; the days for nut-play are over, as i've finally made something of note with it by using it for it's inteded purpose, albeit accidently.

That's Adeline Raleigh Clark, if you must know, and she's a she. She's just tick under 8 pounds, enjoys napping and loves the works of James Joyce. Adeline (or Addy to her friends) joined the Danger Crew at 5:28 in the goddamned morning, August 6th 2008.

Everyone's been asking about how i feel, what it's like to be a father, etc, and i'd rather not bore you with the details. Instead, let's think on that scence in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home when Dr. McCoy asks Spock (who you'll remember died a noble and heroic death saving his shipmates in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and was ressurected by the Genesis device in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock) what it was like be dead. Spock of course responded that McCoy had never been dead, and having no frame of reference, could not relate. What a dick.

Anyway, when it happens to one of you, i would just like to say i have your back. Also, i did this because i'm fucked up:

Yeah, i know. It's disturbing.

"To get your dick sucked to a Conway Twitty record is something else."

Just read an interview with big boi that pretty much kicks ass.

from Pitchfork:

"The elements of a good story are most definitely details, little bitty details. That does it, especially when you're describing, when you're setting the scene and everything. It's like you're painting a picture, so details are very important. Also, the music gotta be right. The music can really set the tone for the story and let you know what the story is gonna be about, but definitely, it's the vibe in the place where you at and the detail."
He goes on to talk about hanging out with the ballet and getting his dick sucked to conway twitty song. A must read.
