Jefe de Jefes

I'm sure we're all aware that Mexico has recently (actually, forever) been a hotbed of unimaginable drug violence, the kind that makes our Hollywood crime dramas look utterly chickenshit. Recently Mexico's #1 drug capo and crime boss, Arturo Beltran Leyva, was gunned down by the Mexican military. Read his story here.

Attention Haters

.

Avatar is a good film. It seems to me most of the danger crew thinks it looks stupid. I had a good time watching it. I feel like it benefits from seeing it on the big screen. (I know none of you will go in the theaters but your missing out) the 3D is cool because it helps expand the universe and not used in a gimmicky way with stuff coming at you.

You could probably tell me the whole story right now. Its part Fern Gully, part English settlers killing Indians, part Dino-Riders.
But the story is not really what I liked. I enjoyed going to another world. What I really mean is a chance to spend time in someone’s imagination. The best fantasy films and filmmakers do this. Everyone complained about the new star wars movies, because the acting was flat among other reasons. I just wanna go to outer space and see how they do things up their. I recall sitting in the theater during the prequels thinking wow I would have never come up with a idea that was so cool. Avatar lets you see how James Cameron sees the world which is interesting to me. I admit the blue guys in it look kinda gay. However it was cool to see all the animals, plants, and ships. I always like fantasy films; this is just a good example of the genre.

The movie is entertaining and looks unique. I was never bored during the just under 3 hours. If I knew what would happen next their was still the pleasure of the style it was pulled off with. The theme is nature vs technology. That’s weird because Cameron is a champion of technological advances. All his films have been on the cutting edge of special effects. Only true Lies seemed like coasting (it was a fun guilty pleasure though). There are call backs to his other film Aliens- guys in robots suits.

On the money tip the movie almost made it budget back the first weekend (counting international gross). So the film is a success, which I dig cause I wanna see the next James Cameron movie.

Pretentiously Informative

Ghostly's best of.

and if it's long the rest here.

Daamn!! Zooey Dechanel

I've been thinking about starting a new weekly post to stir up some chatter amongst the Crew. Up for some debating?

A while ago, I believe with Rick, we had a discussion about the amount of Actresses that suck. We named a lot and I continue to see movies with females that I would never want to see in a flick again. Here is where we do the opposite. Now, I promise that I will NOT pick just hot chicks with no talent. I will defend everyone I pick like I will with Mrs. Dechanel whether you agree or not will be left to the comments. Begin we shall (Yoda talks like that - funny, yes?)

First I will begin with the obvious, Daamn she is HOT! Can't deny that.

Now that I got that out of the way, movie credits:
Almost Famous, Elf, All the Real Girls, 500 Days of Summer, Live Free or Die, Winter Passing, Gigantic, and Surf's Up. I know there are more but these were off the top. This chick can act plain and simple. If she's in a movie I will see it.

She's good looking, she reminds me of a not so typical girl next door and, wait for it, she can sing? Yes, I believe she can. I've listened to some and it's not so bad. Plus, she's got to like Death Cab for Cutie a little bit and I love them.

I know what you're thinking, Mike V, with all this could there possibly be anything wrong with this chick. Unfortunately, yes there is.

The Happening is what's wrong with her. This movie is not only one of the worst I've ever seen but it could have been a career killing in some cases. Luckily it didn't hurt hers but man was was it a blow. I really doubted her acting abilities after this. I didn't think it could all be Shymalanananananan's fault. The acting itself sucked. I did forgive her though after seeing Yes Man, Gigantic and 500 Days of Summer. I liked all three and with her previous work in the back of my mind I overlooked the movie not to be named.

So let me hear what you have to think. Did I forget a movie or is there something about her that you like or dislike or do you know something I don't? I want to talk, learn and think.

Rian Johnson

The director of Brick scored again with The Brothers Bloom!!

I saw Brick a little while ago and loved it. C Hinds owns it talked me into watching it and I'm glad I did. If you haven't seen it I suggest you do.

This movie features an ejoyable lead actor in Joseph Gordon-Levitt and a story written so well that it excites me to think about it again while I write this review. From the beginning I was hooked and stayed that way throughout. Johnson turns a normal high school day, week into a modern day Sherlock Holmes adventure. There was nothing wrong with this movie and I don't want to give anything away so here is my rating:

V V V V V

The Brothers Bloom was just as exciting. The beginning was a lead up and the ending had me second guessing myself every moment. The middle did slow down a tad and I'm not the biggest Rachel Weisz fan but Brody and Ruffalo did a great job and Johnson's amazing writing ability had me anticipating all kinds of things. Who knew what was true or false by end? That will be all I say on this except that you should see this movie:

History

Danger Crew. History. What is off limits if any? If a retelling is to be told, as single mindedly twisted as any of us could make it, what would the objections be? Omissions for the sake of our questionable decency? Editor credits for all?

doomriders - darkness comes alive (dirty rock and roll with lots of guitar harmonies)

converge - axe to fall

coalesce - ox/oxep (this is two releases but they are meant to go together)

wolves in the throne room - black cascade

wolves in the throne room - malevolent grain ep (its only two songs but they are too good not to list)

algernon cadwallader - some kind of cadwallader (great indie rock)

caspian - tertia (instrumental post rock)

narrows - new distances (great hardcore band featuring members of botch)

isis - wavering radiant

gifts from enola - from fathoms (more post rock)

pheonix - wolfgang amadeus phoenix

shrinebuilder - self titled (epic doomy rock, members of om, neurosis, and the melvins)

Taking Woodstock

Here is my review but I really want yous guys to see it so I can hear what yous guys think.

Start off with the Bad first:
False Advertising - Netflix and IMDB both labeled this as a comedy. It is not.
Hippies - I hate them.
Emile Hirsch - I really like him in everything I've seen but he was awful as a Vietnam Vet. Didn't work.
Split Screen - At first it was cool but after a while it got frustrating. I wanted to see what was going on, on both sometimes three screens. Ang Lee put so much detail in them that I know I missed some shit. Also, at one time there were two conversations going on.
Demetri Martin - I just didn't like him in this. I kept waiting for a joke, remark or facial expression that would give his character some life.

Good:
Liev Schreiber - he makes one hell of a hot chick.
And Lee - There were certain shots in this movie that gave me the feeling of freedom. The way Lee shot some of this made me feel kind of what these people were trying to live. The no worries, make love not war mindset really showed. Weird to describe but Lee did a good job on it.
Split Screen - It was cool in the beginning but it got out of hand later.

Overall, the thing that saved the movie for me was that it's a true story. I do enjoy learning, sometimes, even if it's about things I don't really care about.

V V V

Raekwon - House of Flying Daggers (feat. Inspectah Deck, GZA, Ghostface Killah & Method Man)

Video: Junior Boys - Bits & Pieces

Begone Dull Care might not have been thier best record, but Bits & Pieces was an instant classic. Enjoy this clip; it reminded me of that fucked up busta rhymes video. you know the one.

Herbert Frundle IV's Musical Menagerie of Magnificent Music 2009 Edition

None of these are in any ranking order whatsoever.

Best Debut Artists

XX - The XX
After Robots - Blk Jks
Album - Girls

Albums of the Year

Merriweather Post Pavilion - Animal Collective
Two Suns - Bat For Lashes
Beware - Bonnie Prince Billy
Begone Dull Care - Junior Boys
Person To Person - Foreign Born
Veckatimest - Grizzly Bear
Everything Is New - Jack Penate
Post-Nothing - Japandroids
Sainthood - Tegan & Sara

I listened to A.C. and G.B. the most both enjoying and tearing apart. They both hold up, and they both tickle my fancy on every listen. If i'm tainted by critics and their reviews, at least they didn't let me down this year. Bat for Lashes, play the fucker loud by yourself and fight me, i dare you. Will Oldham with beware put out a record that brings together everything he's best at, without it being a best of. My mom, lee, and me went to a show and all enjoyed it thoroughly, how's that for a cross-demographic from a dude most people never give a shot? Jack Penate made me appreciate the random nature of my iPod and reiterated that i'm not insane for downloading so much music searching for nuggets. They pop up every now and then, and when they do, I don't know how i went on without it. Tegan and Sara, no brainer. Japandroids, likewise. Junior Boys, maybe not their best, but made me groove the most, so better than their peers this year and nothing to scoff at.

Best Heavy Shit
Crack The Skye - Mastodon
Blue Record - Barroness
New Junk Aesthetic - Every Time I Die

Hanging around Lee, was made aware of new stuff, and stuff i liked and had forgotten about. Special credit goes to Mastodon for getting me all super hyped again after two years of electro and hip hop, and started really digging deeper. Don't be fooled if lee doesn't rave about something, if he even mentions it it's because it's worth checking out. If he makes a list it'll be a must have of shit most of ya'll have never heard of.

Best Rap/Hip-Hop
Us - Brother Ali
Ghostdini - Ghostface
The Miseducation Of Freddie Gibbs/midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik mix tapes- Freddie Gibbs
Black Boy White Boy -Young Dro & Young LA
Escape2Mars - Gift of Gab

Kid Cudi didn't really do it all for me, Lil Wayne followed up last year's barrage with loads of horseshit. Bun B spent all his time on so so guest verses. Outkast still hiding. For me, this year was the shittiest in a long time for rap. Plenty of ok albums, but no hands down great ones. Mass Return of the Wu was good. Freddie Gibbs had the best mixtapes, but still hold more of a "can't wait for the big flashy debut album" feel. Young Dro & Young LA put out the goods, but no anthems. Gift of Gab takes it close to old Blackalicious greatness, but not quite. Brother Ali had the only great "Album". Solid story telling raps, a super distinct voice, and great beats. Four albums deep of consistant goodness and the dude still has that hungry energy. If you go for any of these, get Brother Ali.

Best Electronicish
Moondagger - Deastro
Horror Disco - Bottin
A Certain Distance- Lusine

Get Moondagger now. Crazy lush pop buried under mountains of shimmery splendor. I mowed the lawn to this several times and found myself stopped in the yard and dancing praying the neighbors weren't watching me. Immediately accessible, yet complicated enough you keep going back to deconstruct it. Just listen to it, you'll thank me.

Best Lo-Fi Lullabies
My Touch - Toro y Moi
Life of Leisure/High Times EP's - Washed Out
Psychic Chasms - Neon Indian
Call & Response EP's - Memory Cassette

Probably the genre highlight of the year, the lo-fi movement was less about generic shitty production like years past, and more about taking it back to basics to remind everyone that done correctly, it doesn't take much to stir it up in your gullet, but takes a whole lot, filtered through some shitty equipment on purpose. Make sense? Of course not. Until you listen to it. Get lost fools.

Best Complete Surprise
Devil's Halo - Meshell NdegeOcello

I'm sure everyone but rick ignored my post, but the fact that i forced him to listen while he fought me and won him over solely with the music should tell you something. Get it now so i don't get drunk and go on "i told you so rants" a year from now.

Funny People

A text tonight between Rick and I could not have been more appropriate and well timed. i wouldn't share such an interaction otherwise. Start to finish:

Chris to Rick: ?
Rick to Chris: It's fun living.
Chris to Rick: It is. I lose track of that constantly.
Rick to Chris: Diddo
Chris to Rick: Thank You.

Don't forget so much assholes.

Top Ten Albums of 09

.

10. Franz Ferdinand- Tonight
9. Them Crooked Vultures- Them Crooked Vultures
8. Jack Peñate- Everything Is New
7. The Black Keys- BLAKROC
6. Phoenix- Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs- It’s Blitz
4. Depeche Mode- Sounds of The Universe
3. U2- No Line On The Horizon
2. Maxwell- BLACKsummer’snight
1. Dan Aerbach- Keep It Hid

I’m the type of weirdo who pays attention to the play count on itunes. These 10 albums were the ones I listened to the most. I liked some other albums but these were the ones I feel the closest to. Before this year I never listened to Maxwell and Phoenix or even heard of Jack Peñate. The rest of the musicians I had a long history with. There were some of my favorite bands that put out records that I didn’t feel where at the top their game. For example Junior Boys, Pearl Jam, Weezer, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Flaming Lips, and Bob Dylan. These albums had good songs but not the whole thing. All the ones on my list I can listen to from front to back.

I really like the mood of the Dan Auerbach album. I don’t think any of the songs are the best singles of the year but as a whole album it really works for me. I found myself driving around listening to it often. I really got into R&B in a big way this year. Specifically, Motown and 70’s soul records where in constant rotation. Maxwell is an off-shoot of that genre. He seems like one of the few people continuing in that vein. I can put on his album and get lost in the world he creates. I downloaded all his stuff and its all real good. U2 and Depeche Mode always go together for me. They are peers and have both have had good comebacks in the last few years. U2 is more hit and miss but more interesting doing it. With Depeche you know what your gonna get but I like that mood so its great when they have an album with strong songs. With Yeah Yeah Yeahs I liked that they went in a more dance direction. Their last album was frustrating; this one was back to fun.

Phoenix was a band I only knew about from the song on the Lost in Translation soundtrack. I didn’t know the name just liked the song. I never did any further research. They are a great pop band with monster hooks. I have gone back a gotten other albums of theirs. They been good for a while but this is their best yet. I felt strange putting two Black Keys projects on the list but they are so different it seemed ok. Blakroc is a bad idea (rock/rap) that shouldn’t work. However, I feel it succeeds by bringing together good musicians (Mos Def, RZA, ODB). The website with the making of videos is essential if you have not checked it out. Jack Peñate was totally Chris’s baby. He came in the house yelling “I found it”. Turns out he actually had. It’s a great pop record but never boring. I doubt this dude will ever be big in the states but I dig em. Them Crooked Vultures is a dream for me. If you said who you would put in a band this lineup would be one of them (Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones). It is however essentially just a really good Queens of the Stone Age album. The problem with their last couple records was a lack of input from anyone besides Josh Homme. With Crooked Vultures he finally has some worthy peers to work with. Franz Ferdinand is a band I feel won’t really get much props until you add up all the singles after their done. This is their most constant album to date. It is Great music to dance to if you real white or a hipster.

This has been an exciting year for me in music. Due to home sharing, I have gotten and listened to way more music this year (thanks to Lee & Chris). I suspect much of the unusual music I got this year will later be favorites of mine. When I talk to older people about music they say they liked bands when they where younger. I think as you age many people drift away from their friends. As a result musical interests they shared goes too. I was worried last year about loosing contact with my friends. I’m glad to reconnect with every one this year. I never wanna lose the discussion and sharing of music.

Chunk Rakords, 2009. Best Ones.

2009 was a different kind of year for me; myriad reasons, but they follow from one, and that's being a father. New car, new house, new schedule, waaaay less money, waaaay more responsibility, etc. Anyway, i'm spending much more time at home and around the neighborhood, and as consequence i've been able to spend more time on movies, music, books, video games, and the like. I thought it would be terrible, but i thought wrong. In addition to having more time to listen to music, i've had more time and resources to acquire it. This blog has really showed out this year in that regard, thanks to some work from lee, and now we can share with each other much more easily than before.

Music is still the only 'end of year' thing i can honestly participate in tho, and i do so with relish. last year my top albums were from acts i knew nothing about the year before, and once again i'm in the same boat. I like this. it's exciting.

Anyway, here's my top 10 albums from 2009, with the ones i like more higher up and the ones less lower down.

xx - the xx
post-nothing - japandroids
merriweather post pavillion - animal collective
life of leisure/high times eps - washed out
only built 4 cuban linx II - raekwon
veckatimest - grizzly bear
hold time- m. ward
begone dull care - junior boys
album - girls
lp- discovery

My Album of the Year: xx - the xx
The Runner- Up: post-nothing - japandroids

I guess simpler was better this year, as my two favorite records were unadorned and unfussy. Japandroids made a record that is best listened to ear splitting loud, from the stereo in your car, while you drive fast. I've always had a weakness for records like this, and was happy to have these young men help prematurely deafen me. Japandroids effortlessly capture that 'fuck yes' feeling of being young, something i think we're all starting to miss.

So how the fuck did the xx make a better record, or one i like more anyway? i don't really know.

but this record is great. maybe it's because xx didn't try to make me like it. i dismissed it on first listening (i was sold on japandriods 30 seconds into 'wet hair'), began to like it by the fifth, and became obsessed by 20th. every week i fell for a new song, and i kept returning to see what else might seduce. the production, vocals and playing are all perfectly considered and arranged, but it doesn't feel fussed over, like vecatimest. the back and forth between the vocalists is echoed in the instrumentation; its like the whole of it is one of those hot and bothered, writhing make out conversations. or maybe, it's just that, to quote crazy jesse "i wanna fuck that chicks voice."

Notes on the Rest:

returning records from animal collective, grizzly bear, and junior boys were all keepers for me. merriweather post pavillion is so fucking weird and wonderful i want to eat lsd and run around on the beach with it on blast. it's certainly the most inventive, creative "wow" record on my list, but i didn't put it up top because a) i think 'feels' might be better, and b) i liked the other two records more. oh well.

And what bearing should a better record from your back catalog really have on a best of the year list? Ask the Junior Boys, whose begone dull care wasn't quite as good as their last record, or maybe even their first. But still a great record, nonetheless. or maybe just a good record from a a great band. anyway i liked it, so there.

On the flip-side, Grizzly Bear's Vecakimeist was much better than it's predecessor Yellow House, which just bored the living shit out of me. Vecaktimest is a polished, beatific record with only a couple of boring spots. that's why it's down here.

Washed out was an awesome suprise from chris, and i guess doesn't technically belong here as there is no lp in thier catalog, only two lonely eps. but i listened to them as one on my ipod, and i'm counting them, so fuck you.

Raekwon is technically returning, as is M. Ward but they were both new to me this year. Try these back to back for contrast: M. Ward's 'Jailbird" and Raekwon's 'New Wu.'

Also, Girls and Discovery made records i liked. Listen, please.

Great Movies of 09

.
Great Movies of 09

1. Star Trek- Franchise best. Works for people who don’t even like Star Trek.

2. Watchmen- Ambitious thought provoking. I had more discussions about this movie then any other this year.
3. The Hangover- Non stop laughs, pure craziness.

4. Adventureland- Underrated film with a lot of emotion and humor.

5. Zombieland- I’m not a horror fan, good thing this was a comedy.

6. (500) Days of Summer- Deals with relationships in a real way. I’m totally into Zooey Deschanel!
7. Tyson- Great psychological study of a confusing individual. Half mad-child, half beast.
8. Away We Go- Another good relationship movie and great road trip.

9. I Love You, Man- Comedy gold, perfect look at guys hanging out.

10. Where the Wild Things Are- Not your average family film, demands multiple viewings.

Animated Films
1. Coraline- Extreme weird and scary movie.
2. Fantastic Mr. Fox- God bless Wes Anderson and his quarks.
3. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs- A lot better than you think it be.
4. UP- Pixar always hits it out the park. (Except Cars, that was lame)
5. Monsters vs. Aliens- Cool idea and great cast that adds humor.

That Sucks
1. Transformers 2- This movie is a mindless, headache inducing waste of time.
2. Paul Blart: Mall Cop- supposedly a comedy, I never laughed.
3. I Love You, Beth Cooper- Spent most of this one with my hands in the air saying why?
4. G-Force- Whoever thought this was a good idea is stupid.
5. New Moon- Kinda like Transformers 2. Didn’t like the 1st one and the 2nd almost killed me.

Netflix- New to Me
1. All the Real Girls (2003)- From the director of Pineapple Express (David Gorden Green). Great film about love.
2. Kicking and Screaming (1995)- Comedy about college life. Feels like hanging with friends. Its not the soccer movie. (On Instant)
3. Do the Right Thing (1989)- Spike Lee classic, never caught the whole thing. Newsflash its great.
4. Dead Ringers- David Cronenberg is a weird dude. Here’s another example why. Jermey Irons in his career best role. (On Instant)
5. Scott Walker: 30 Century Man (2006)- Strange musician you get as close a look as you could hope from a shut-in. (On Instant)
6. The Hit (1984)- Great thriller, super under the radar.
7. Body Heat (1981)- Erotic thriller with a hell of a twist. Kathleen Turner used to be attractive, who knew.
8. Bigger, Stronger, Faster (2008)- Documentary about steroid use in sports. Made me think. (On Instant)
9. Snow Angels (2007)- Another good drama from David Gorden Green. Sam Rockwell is good as usual.
10. Bukowski: Born into This (2003)- Documentary about a writer who I didn’t know much about, but now I’m a fan. (On Instant)

Coming Up- Anticipated Films
1. Up in The Air- George Clooney, its looks awesome.
2. Sherlock Holmes- Guy Richie can hopefully get back to the days when he made great films. Robert Downey Jr. is on a role right now.
3. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans- Nick Cage needs a come back.
4. Invictus- almost a yearly thing now: another good Clint Eastwood movie.
5. Crazy Heart- Jeff Bridges as a musician, might win a Oscar for it.

Missed the Cut: Good Movies but Not Good Enough
11. District 9
12. Funny People
13. Anvil: Story of Anvil
14. Public Enemies
15. Moon

Chromeo - Nice N Clean

Chromeo on Addy's favorite show. Shit is hot!

Since I've Been Gone

Unfortunately for me some fuck face designed a kick ass virus that brought my computer down, hard. And me with out internet at my hizzy for a while. Fortunately for me I know a guy. A guy that revived her before she became scrap metal or robot parts. So I would like to thank that guy, Chunks T, for bringing my digital lady back to the lively sex box I'm use to. Three cheers.

In that time I did watch a flick or two and instead of reviewing a couple I will put a list up with ratings and if you want to discuss a particluar one then let's do it. List:

Funny People - 5
Angels and Demons - 3
Bruno - 4
Star Trek - 5
Trick r' Treat - 4
Battle for Terra - 3
Monsters v Aliens - 3
The Burrowers - 4
Whatever Works - 5
The Plan - 4
Observe and Report - 1
Blood: The Last Vampire - 3
Drag Me to Hell - 4
Land of the Lost - 4
Tansformers: Revenge of the Fallen - 3
G I Joe: The Rise of Cobra - 4
G I Joe: Resolute - 2
The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - 2
X-Men Orgins: Wolverine - 4
Assassination of a High Scool President - 3

I was going to do a "V" rating on these but as I was doing it, it looked confusing so I just put digits up in the form of Stars.
