In the course of discusing my Panda vs Panda post, Chris had wondered if his copy of animal collective's 'strawberry jam' was bunk. I hope this does not add to the confusion.

On record, this track is nearly perfect.

some singers have timeless appeal

even if it's for all the wrong reasons

i feel like i tied up a loose end on sunday

while this probably means very little to most of you. at the Gainesville fest less than jake played a surprise show under a fake name. this was one of the bands i listened to all throughout high school and never got to see so it pretty much made my day.

lies?

buy fireworks for christmas.
I just think it's a good idea to stock up.

fragment one

Following the jump is a piece from my on again, off again work at writing a fictionalized version of our history....this particular bit i wrote last year at the jeep place, and then brushed up a little tonight.

it was an experiment in capturing the pace and atmosphere; i wanted to do a piece where you were just sort of cold dropped right into the non-action. anyway i liked it when i wrote it and i like it even more now; it was the first fragment that i felt contained the voice and pacing nessecary.

keep in mind this a draft, and when i write i have a tendency to be unhappy with the tenses or phrasing and so i'll change it on the fly...sometimes it makes a mess. comment your opinions, i'm thinking of growing this one.

It was only the second week of september, but Peter was already sporting his prematurely worn brown knit sweater. He maintained the fucntion of the garmet was to keep him warm in spite of his cold nature, but this arguement was somewhat undermined by the giant, ragged holes in the knees of his black denim jeans. Later, as we pressed into late october, he took to wearing his pajama bottoms under them, to keep the warm in.

Peter and I had, by this point, become unfazed by long silences while in each others company; these moments could be described as thoughtful, though honestly we were thinking of little. It was mostly a by-product of the drugs, kind weather, and aimless joy. Just a long consideration of his clothing, a simple mintue lazily reclining my head in a fashion that i was certain looked pensive and intellegent . In fact i was doing little more than enjoying newly cool late summer air, watching the leaves in a neighbooring tree slide back and forth from the breeze, in front of each other, the gold southern sun saturating the spaces between.

This was the pace of things, more often than not.

Drawing a slow breath, i looked back across the porch at peter and answered him:

"Shit. I don't have it. But if we could find someone else to throw in, we might be able to drink it all before they realize what's happening."

Peter was drawn by my comment out of intense and totally pointless obervation of a insect carcass. Still looking down at his query, he said, mostly to himself: "this bug only has four legs" and then looked up at me, his eyes growing wider behind his oversized glasses.

"That's not a bad idea. We could get Jesse to throw in, but he'd probably just drive off, like the other night.

"Yeah...fuck that, I gave him ten dollars for that bottle." I was becoming annoyed at my absent cousin.

Peter laughed, a little angrily. This was a reaction we saved for jesse:

"That crazy motherfucker...I gave him ten dollars for that too. He didn't pay for ANY of it."

Jesse's deception had become clear, and for a moment our amusemnt turned to indignation. The breeze picked up a little..the sound of brakes screamed at a distance. Peter continued, the study of the bug now long behind him:

"AND he came by this morning before work- packed himself a bowl out of MY bag." We had discovered the evidence upon waking several hours ago. Jesse had left the blacked pipe laying on it's side, this permitting a small piece of buring marijuna to tumble out, putting a nasty brown hole in peter's makeshift beachtowel tablecloth. next to this smoldering ruin lay jesse's forgetten cell phone... and wallet.

This we realized, about jesse leaving his wallet, and us desperatly needing three dollars, at diffrent times. Peter had smiled and laughed, walking into the house. I had taken an interest in a plastic cap gun, and was momentarily distracted.

All in Your Area!

For Sociology class my group was giving the assignment of conducting a experiment. Usually experiments are boring things like watching plants grow. however, listen to this one. A personal space invasion test. My group went to the library picked out people. The criteria was they be sitting by themselves at a table. I thought this would be fun. It turns out violating social norms is nerve racking. we decided to get drunk first. After several drinks we came back to library and let the fun begin. This is a white rich school so it was really easy to punk people out. I'd pick out somebody with their books next to them and make em move the books so i could sit down. then play the music on the ipod so loud anyone in a ten foot radius can hear it. I also put my arm on their chair and looked over their shoulder. most people will just sit their and take it. Girls get much more freaked out. One guy told me to fuck off and wouldn't move his stuff. eventually most of the people were on to us so we had to dip. Next time your drunk sit closely to strangers and see what happens.

Everything under the SunCom

I just came back from trying to pay my cell phone bill; seemingly a simple process involving no human interaction. This is my preferred way to pay a bill- a swipe of a card, the feeding of cash into a little slot, and i'm good for another month or two. SunCom, my wireless carrier, has this wonderfully simple little kiosk in the back of the store where you can pay in a quick and merry fashion...i've grown so familiar with the machine that sometimes i chose the spanish language option just for the challenge.

Unfortunately, roughly half of my trips to attempt of pay are hindered by that most unfortante creature, the broad stereotype. Today it was an elderly woman, screaming at obsenteties at the machine, which took it all in stride and refused to give her a receipt (it turned out this was because she hadn't payed anything yet.) I noticed she was feeding checks into the thing; the check seems like a real anachromism to me. Seriously, does anyone under 30 fuck with these things on a day to day basis. But i digress...the my previous try at payment was hindered by a black man who involed in a conversation with a woman on the other side of the store- she thought he was "sweet meat" but it turns out "sweet meat" was, in fact, his cousin. In both instances, i laughed and left.

You could accuse me of being rascist, or ageist, but I actually get really sad and dissapointed when someone appears to be a walking stereotype. Any thoughts?

behind the times

been enamored with all the bootlegs, mixtapes, whatever, never actually listened to The Carter II in it's entirety. i'm assuming i'm way behind the times, but i present to you Shooter, a song that made me stop in my tracks and repeat it five times in a row on the headphones today. Between all the crazy shit going on in the production, and the fact lil wayne ALMOST adjusted his flow and put effort into this shit, fuck it. this shit is wild. it gave me the tingly giddy feeling i don't feel so often anymore in regards to music. if you already knew and don't care, give it another go, if you aren't hip, listen to this shit, you'll cream your panties. rule #1, finish it off with some horns and you're done, son.

devin the dude

Ok, I'm sure that c-rock is all over this already, and as so may most of you be.
But I heard some tracks off D the D's new album and it's a grade a smash hit.
this is funny:

off to the fest

so later this evening weylin and i are off to the fest. i will give a report on the weekends activities.

Albini Summary (for Pete)

it was a very interesting meeting. he started off kind of putting a few rumors to rest about him being an analog elitist. he said the reason he only uses tape is because he has never felt limited by it and has never felt the need to use digital means, and that he has nothing against digital.

another thing he seemed to feel strongly about was him being an engineer and not a producer. he said you cant let your personal opinion of a bands music get in the way of how you record or mix the project.

as far as actual techniques he said he likes to record bands playing together as much as possible. he also said he mics almost everything and goes direct into the board as much as he can. and for drums he said he likes to hear the bleed from other parts of the kit to others. like being able to hear the snare on the mic of the toms and not to gate them as heavily as most people do.

those are most of the high points that i can remember, but if i think of anything else i will post it up

Great Movie

If you guys haven't seen Across The Universe your missing out. It actually a good musical. the only other good one i can think of off the top of my head is Hedwig. The film aims really high and comes up short but they get and A for the effort. I would suggest seeing it in a movie theater. It feels more like a concert that way. Some of the songs they fuck up but for the most part its not an embarrassment. The Beatles have so many good songs you could have made a couple musicals out of them. Theirs also some interesting cameos which i won't give away. Lets just say things go a tad bit over the top. I'm gonna buy it when it comes out on DVD, that's the biggest compliment i can give it.

Lock your doors, the town's on fire

Actually, don't lock your doors.. Or atleast don't lock your fences.
There's a bunch of houses that burned down because firefighters couldn't get to them.
Why? Because they fleed their homes and left their electric gates locked.
Ok, that's pretty mean. I am a big peice of shit.
Were's the calander?
Where///////when are we?
We're in merced california and the date isssssss...........let's say September 9th/early morning/the year 2007. Yes, let's just make that the scene.
Between last time and now, I feel that it's necessary to mention that there are wheat thins all over the floor. See, Phil didn't like the flavor he wouldn't eat them. At the end of an endlessly drunk eveining, towards the end of Phil's shower, I thought of a funny joke. I would suprise Phil with a fast moving cloud of crackers to the face as soon as he opened the door. As is common when I'm drunk, my joke was funniest mostly just to me.

I felt bad in the morning and did some of the sweeping. Fuck, we were in a new town. After LA, this was the furthest out that I think any of us had ever been(in CA)......Which was nice, pretty much exactly what I was looking for.
We cleaned up ourselves and our room, checked our internets, and packed up. It's kind of funny how people treat you when you're driving around with an old van full of music gear. This lady came up to me outside and wanted the full story about everything Roxy Jones. I gave the short version about the spiders and how beck played mouth harp on the album. Then she told me about how Beck played mouth harp on her son's album too! Wow! The woman who was up all night serving drinks long after she was supposed to be off work walked by. She wasn't lying when she said she had to be back here early.
After searching for the cheapest hotel the night before, we pretty much already had the lay of the land. Merced is a pretty small town. But it has a huge reputation amongs some of our friends. This is the town where I'm supposed to find the coolest Bar in Cailfornia. This is where there's a huge HedgeCore following that I'm supposed to connect with.......Or was that Fresno??? You know, I don't have any pictures of Merced whict is a goddamded shame. Darrin does, I think. I have a postcard that I never filled out. I don't even know who it's to yet. Fuckin anyway, first order of business this smornirng was that Phil's bass was fucked up and needed help. Well really it just needed duct tape....OH MY GOD WHERE"S THE WALMART!!!!!!!?????????!!!!!! With that out of the way we were off to explore. Merced is a little like Aiken, South Carolina in that every fucking thing is closed on Sunday. The downtown area, despite that setback was really small and really charming.
We ate some crap crap that I don't even recall and went to a shopping center. The only thing that I remeber is that I bought a doctor halloween costume, complete with syringe and stethiscope, that fell apart when I tried to put it on. We were supposed to be at this guy, RC's house at five. Downtown I also found a small casino that had daily poker tournaments, and a small shop with nintendo's and sega genesis's in the window and in the box. My plan from then on was to win a poker tournament and buy a nintendo.
We found the mall. Turns out that's where everyone in Merced is on a Sunday. In Aiken it's pretty much the same. The whole town's at wal mart. We call RC and he says that we shouldn't come over before six now. It's like four now so we've got some time to kill. In the mall we kill time at the arcade and we almost bought some guns at the sporting goods place just cause we could.. Then I bought the Ray Charles 3cd set with all the good early shit, and another album that I immeadiately regreted buying. Of course, the later was the one that would operate in the car stereo. We bull shited around until RC said it was cool to come over.
We get to the address (this was map 2) and there's a parking space right out front. The lawn is nice and trim and the front is green and pretty bare. The house next door looked pretty wild and alive, so I thought that the neighboors were probably pretty cool. I walked up to the doorstep, making sure to use the sidewalk instead of trampling through the grass, and knocked decisively (I didn't see a bell button). A thick, flakey-skined, middle-aged, bald man answers the door.
"Whadda Ya Want?," redundantly, looking aroung our shoulders at the large, tan vehicle in front of his house.
"I'm sorry, but does RC live here?," I am reluctant in asking, already knowing the answer, but hoping for new information.
"He lives next door. Don't park in front of my house."

So it turns out that me and RC have something in common. Asshole neighboors. Then there was a show and blah blah blah.....Ok, I'm gonna finish this tomorrow. I'm afaid of the save feature on this so, I'll just post now and write part 3.2 tomorrow. You know it's over when you use the same three syllable word in two consecutive sentences.....
Speaking of being over, did you know that my shit is so serriouse that it has it's own tide pools?

LEE: I NEED DETAILS YOU FUCKWAD!!!!!!!

Ok, I know I'm on no solid grounds to do this as I'm not MS. BRown.
But. .... .. . .... . I need details on the class from s albini.
seriously. It'll get you writting and I already know that he thinks

sorry, this really doesn't have any bearing on anything. i saw it over at boingboing, one of my favorite blogs. the dog isn't lost, apparently he's just the shit.

Crazy Jesse Chronicles

This is the start on what will hopefully by a weekly column. This intales the modern day adventures of the only celebrity i know.

Week One

So far this week Jesse has lost his keys for going on 4 days now. He has no idea where they are, and i don't believe he's even looked or cares. He also informed me he is quiting his job shortly. School apparently is stupid as well. Therefore, jesse doesn't feel its necessarily to attend class. During a drunken haze he prepared some sort of meal that involved carrots (don't ask). anyways all the ingredients were left out along with most of the uneaten food. As a result i spent my lunch today battling the swarm of flies that have gathered in the 3 days since the food preparation. This past weekend apparently over 3 girls were "on his tip" but they seemed to have all vanished. Now theres a mystery.

just when you thought you could count me out

what up bitches guess whose back in the motherfuckin house

Food For Thought

Let me say that this idea was presented to me while watching a audio commentary track(Sad i Know). The one in question was Knocked Up. Anyway, Seth Rogen said "their is no comedy without self congratulations". This got me thinking, who doesn't think there funny? The dumbest motherfucker will swear that their hilarious. What u think is humorous is all a matter of taste. Can anybody tell a joke without thinking its the shit? Are you a cocksmoker for thinking your funny?

last time with the fires

There was this girl. I was pretty into it.
Really into it actually.
She invited me over and she had a bottle of two buck chuck.
After ten minutes or so, I said I had to go
For I had volunteered my services to the red cross.
I am only 24 years old and living a life of regrets.

Bip Bleep BLop, When is music not music?

After listening to a bunch of Boards of Canada, Autechre, some Aphex, and this new Valet album I got, started thinking about what constitutes music, or a song specifically.

Most, but not all of these, are electronic, Valet is kinda mood music in the vein of some My Bloody Valentine, and plenty of other artists like Atari Teenage Riot and Sonic Youth go full bore into noise rock when they ditch formal songs, and there's a million similiar groups. At what point does repetitive drony noise, or random bleeps and blops constitute music? I'll say ahead of time I love all these artists, but a lot of them have devoted great lengths of albums to apparent random noise along with forays into quieter minimalist stuff. There's plenty of structure in some of them, with some just an underlying beat with no particular noise above it repeated again at any point of a 'song'.

There's been plenty of similiar ground covered, even well before with free jazz and the like, but if you had to try and pin it down, what really constitutes music versus random noise? And further, if it is just random noise, how do we differentiate goodness in relation to a really shitty band that at least tried to put structure to a piece? Is it in the effort, or the outcome?

Forgotten Comrades

What about other Danger Crew members? Jesse actually has a computer. Best i can tell all he does is look at porn and tool lyrics. Lee are silent brother in Florida. V cause the Yankees lost again. Anyway i know they probably wouldn't care but just thought i put it out their.

you're welcome anytime...we never lock the door

i'm seriously glad everyone has particpated...so far this is what i had hoped for, and i hope is close to what chris was thinking about.

the idea, for me anyways, is to share in some fashion the way we have shared in the past. at one time we were all freely sharing ideas and interests at the dome..let us do that again here... i love you all, let us hold nothing back...

i've flipped the switch for all of you to have full powers to edit and fuck shit up....i recommend only chris play with this for now, as the rest of you are to busy with girls and science calculators to understand....also, i've changed to adress as i realized there was a typo in the original......

Track Marks

Song fix for the day- Ohmega Watts' The Platypus Strut off the Watts Happening album. Instrumental off a lengthy album chock full of good shit.

Hey, ya'll, it's a bbq!

If ya'll ain't busy, I figured you could swing by our little 263,000 acre bbq this week here in San Diego. Don't mind the ash in the air, nothing a hankerchief won't solve, (we're going for a Cowboy theme so don't be timid!), and remember that if your coming out from the east, your gonna have to fly in cause the highways are on fire too. Just a heads up, would hate to see you miss the party cause you didn't know. Anyway, you can rsvp us in hell, and don't worry, cause it's gonna be a week minimum before the authorities can shut this party down! We know how to live it up! Bring your hot dogs, some of that famous sweet tea for any of you southerners, and we could really use a couple gallons of water. Be there or be square.

R.I.P.

Ode to TV Links

Your body was so beautiful: round, plush, ass with such sepal breast. Your touch so warm and those sweet kiss so lush. We fell in love under the shady apple tree. Oh how you catered to my nerdy ways. Never judging, my lack of athletic prowess or the obsessive compulsive disorder. Together we lived all summer in the quiet and safety of the air conditioned room. We shared laughs, cried, and held each of all thru the night. Oh my TV Links where have you gone, in this my greatest time of need.

tour recap narative....read on

Ok, so what follows is the first two installments of fractured memories of 2 and a half week on the road with my bandmates in Roxy Jones. It may not make complete sense because these are cut out of peices of posts to the RJ mailing list. Expect further post of this legnth and on this subject because we're only at day two. Wait till we get to portland!!!!
Anyway here goes......
Oh, and if anyone associated with us danger folks wants to be a part of the RJ emails, drop me a line at nobodywants2brj@yahoo.com
As we were......

EPISODE 1 (originally titled "How to Shop for Roxy Jones in a Seller's Market)

Thanks so much to every person who shared with us a
good time on the road, to everyone who helped us play
a show, to everyone who came to watch and those who
played with us. Extra special thanks to everyone who
opened up there homes and their kitchens (Katie's
award-winning, secretly-veggy muffins for starters).
Those who opened their wallets for us get atleast a
year of good luck starting tomorrow!

I've been meaning to peice this trip together for a
week? Two weeks now?
It's hard to tell. I've got two different calenders
that say we were in more than one town on certain
nights. Which one is the master calander?
Let's start the night before the begining...

I should have been packed already. I should
have atleast been packing. Instead I was playing
pinball in the Pink Elephant. Was that what I was
doing? I seem to remember being at several bars for
Meaghan's birthday, but I'm not sure if that was the
night before or not. I jumped in the bushes and
Promised Drew that I would search for the true
proponents of Fresno Hedgecore. A promise that would
be broken days later.
Whichever night that was doesn't mater. It
was the night before we left that I was closing down
the bar by myself.....Instead of getting ready. My
plan was to just throw some shit in the van, and the
van was in the shop still. Perhaps drinking was the
only logical course. Despite my rationalization, I
was feeling odd. Sort of like being the only one in
gym class on acid. No one could understand why I
just wanted to hide under the bleachers and play
pinball. In truth, nobody cared. It was just another
night at the same fucking bar with the same fucking
people--friends, aquantinces, and all of them
well-wishers--I was anxious to get out of town for a
spell. How much would I miss this drinking until two
at the same place. It was in the air.

9/7/07 Show in Los Angeles at 9pm...Proposed
departure time
from San Diego: 2pm

It was 3pm, and we were not ready, nor was the
van ready for pick up. A steal at $500, we were
having $2800 worth of "the works" for the past week,
the mechanic knowing that "James" had to be on the
road today. We were starting to sweat.
Skip forward to us in Echo Park trying to find
a place called Pehrspace, which we find. Our old
friends Minmae are playing there with us tonight,
along with their friends Chase Frank. It's always
nice to see a familiar face in an unfamiliar town.
After having 30 egg rolls and boba tea next door, we
play a show to a small crowd that includes Darrin's
sister, her husband, their two kids, and a handful of
people there to see the other two bands. We are
officially in uncharted territory and it feels great.
We stay the night at Darrin's sisters house which is
amazing! Phil and I get our own private room and each
our own private bed.
I woke up early and made my bed before
catching Darrin drinking some sort of orange rind tea.
Then we all went outside for a smoke. We discussed
our future plans and wether or not they would include
owning such a nice place. After I brush my teeth I
snapped some photos of a school project belonging to
Darrin's nephew. It was a model of Alcatraz that
suggested using the condemned prison as a solution to
the problem of limited space for relocating native
americans. Considering the information in grade
school history books concerning "indians", his heart
was definately in the right place. Privy to growing
up and learning a little more, I'm sure he would
appreciate my need to take a photograph. That said,
both of these children seemed very bright. Awards
everywhere for everything.
After our daily reorganization of James we
were on the road to Merced, and a day early at that.

***********************************************************************

EPISODE 2 (originally titled "Vodka and Apple Juice, Is This Ok?"

No, I've opted instead for a beer. If I went the
vodka route, I would have to have a cigarette, and I
don't feel like buying any. Or smoking any... That's
a lie. I would love to smoke one right now but I
won't. One too many mornings and a thousand bucks
behind.....
Once again, scroll down if you hate the narritive BS.

I left out a part last time that I feel is pretty
important. Mostly because playing in LA was the
closest to home and the only time we got lost. Unless
you count Oakland, but wasabi peanuts will only get
you so far when trying to navigate underground
roadways. Before we move on, I will make short of
this:
We were going to stay with Darrin's sister in LA, but
with real jobs and two young children to put to bed,
we were left at Pehrspace with only directions to said
house. Hours later we discovered that these
directions involved several roads and highways that,
at later hours, were closed for matinence. Needless
to say, our drive to the house was long and difficult,
involving many wild goose chase instructions from
people who didn't understand me any more than I
understood them. I plan to speak fluent spanish
within the year. It's been too long, and besides, my
mexican friends are tired of me using the same dirty
words that I learned three years ago working in the
lighting warehouse. We got to the house at maybe 3
o'clock to make it easy.
Skip forward to the next day.
Each day was planned out with a printed map
marked with a number to indicate it's order in the
trip. Today was 2.
We started by fueling the van and then our
stomachs. This meal is not worth any further
discussion, but it did the trick. And then we were on
the road to---checking calender for verification---as
I though, Merced.
It was early Saturday morning and we were
scheduled to play a house party at 6pm on Sunday.
This meant that we would be arriveing a day early with
a day off....Which was excellent, because we had heard
nothing but good things about the town to which we
were heading.
The drive was pretty uneventful, my memory is
only attached at this point to two things. This was
the drive that would define the limitations of the
van. Both we Had Been warned about.

Maybe this would be a good time to go into a
little detail about our van's history:

ROXY JONES TRANSPORT VESSLE

name: James (t. kirk?)
make, model: 1987 Ford Econoline 250, 6-cylindarr

one very fucked up
stereo

Coffee heals what liquor steals.
Buy a house on the coast and
fall into the ocean.
we'll never slow down
saving the planet is just a commercial now.
Things like this were written in some sort of barely
visible paint all over the windshield. This made it
incredibly hard to focus. Especially with the
goddamned stereo situation.

Before we even got out of town (narrowly
dodging a $2000 bill from the manager of our practice
space) the van started to malfunction. This was
immeadiately upsetting considering that we were
already another $2800 down in repairs and two and a
half hours late leaving and on the phone with our
landlord telling him we're in LA already and the
check's in the mail while simultaniously being right
in front of the building with all our shit packed out
in a van that won't fucking start that we just go out
of the shot ten fucking minutes ago!
FUCK!!!!!!!!!
But it started, just like it would every
other time this happened throughout the trip. Yes,
sometimes it was scarry, but it always worked. It
became like a funny mind game that James would play
with us. With each time James seemed more and more
human.
That was minor. The first problem that
really got our attention was that the cd player was
close to usless. It wouldn't skip tracks, and the
first track would never play. Fifteen minutes of
turning the power off and on seemed to fix it. So the
music flourished. Maybe we listened to Tom Petty's
last album (next to last?), Highway Companion? The
New York dance compilation in the nice box may have
also been in this rotation.
But the music had to be turned off, along
with everything else when we hip the grapevine.
We started at a speed of 65mph, a constant
rate that became my mantra of safe driving quickly. I
noticed that the van would not blow up if you kept it
below 70mph. So I drove at 65 to keep some headroom.
Not that 70 meant anything. It just hadn't blown up
yet, and I may be prone to superstition.
Back to the future, we were losing power and
speed rapidy as we began to arch in velocity up the
mountain, like we had hit a runaway truck ramp and
could be sure that all was safe and we would stop in
time. Except at 30mph, we were not in danger of
running away from anything. If I remeber correctly,
at this point Darrin was sleeping in the passanger
seat, and Phil was staring over my shoulder, seeing
the same thing as me. There were two needles in two
opposide corners of the console. The one on the upper
left was for the gas gauge, and the one in the upper
right indicated the temperature of the engine. They
were both moving alarmingly fast in oppisite
directions.
Problem number two: bad with hills.

***********************************************************************

09/08/07 aprox. 8 or 12pm Merced, CA

I originally remebered it as around sundown, but I
also clearly recall getting there only an hour or two
before the bars closed. Oh, wait. Most of these were
hotel bars, and we were try to find a pool that was
open after 10? We bought gas and decided that we
would get a hotel for the night.
First we drove around a bit. We searched for
the new university, maybe something going on
there.....Main st. G st? we were on the main drag
and excited about the town. It was quite small but a
cozy, and instantly familiar place. Though none of us
had ever been there. We decided to find a place to
stay. I had to make a BM pretty bad too.
All the hotels in Merced were off of one exit
that led to a confusing intersection. After a few
tries though, we we on the hotel drags stopping at
each place asking the same questions:
How much? How many beds? Wireless or
ethernet? How late can we swim in the pool? Where's
the closest bar?
These questions would become routine in more than one
town. After visiting four or five places, we found
one that was the cheapest with a pool and right next
door to a bar. The bar sucked serrious ass and wanted
an a $4 cover to watch middle aged biker scum
wannabe's smell bad. No thanks. We spent the ten
extra dollars to stay in the swank place with the cute
desk clerk. We saved millions by buying our own beer.
In the hotel, Bob Saget is on t.v. saying
"fuck, cunt, or crack cocaine" ever half second. I
think he should sit down with Dr. Phil one of these
days. Dr. Phil from Roxy Jones, of course.
There is a bar at the hotel, but we are told
that it is already closed. The rest of the evening is
a little hazy, but these are things that happened for
sure:
We bought our own alcohol. We bought our own
dinner. I demonstrated my skills with nunchucks in
the parking lot, which got us invited to a "private
party" at the hotel bar. The private party turned out
to be a bunch of martial arts jocks in town for a
convention who were keeping the poor bartender hours
late despite that she had to be back in the morning.
Phil drank a something and I had a double jack and
coke that might as well have been a pint of whiskey.
No, wait, they had no jack so I was given crown royal
for the same price. We tipped well and tried to
distance ourselves from the freaks, although I did try
to make friendly by asking to join a game of poker. I
was rudely rufused. We finished our drinks and headed
back to the room.
Somehow we ran into Albert and Red. They
were firefighters on their way north to extinguish
some shit. They had just arrived with the rest of
their engine crew in a big green truck. It brought
back memories of my first fall in california. The
year of the great cedar fire that looked like an
atomic blast when I woke up that afternoon five years
ago. I made sure that as soon as this crew was off
the clock, they drank beers and we all played guitar
and shot the shit in the street until the senior desk
clerk told us that people were complaining. We gave
up the guitar but continued to drink and shot the
shit. Before we all went to bed (they were due to
leave at 7:30) they let me put on a fire suit to take
pictures. I told them I'd mail a picture and a copy
of our cd as soon as we got it. It has been mailed.

The tempo's slow, but I'm ready to go
On days when nothing is quite the way it should be.
You can never hold any certain variable in place for
any
measureable amount of time.
Certainly not, invariabley not.
Ha!
When we first met, you had held so tight that some
blood from your
face stuck to my shirt. And now
we sit in two different airplanes meeting only in
cold, lonely
refueling stations dimly lit with
only a few flourescent bulbs high in the air
rolling between on and off like heavy sheets of rain
playing
shadows with a street lamp.
